BEST: Better Teachers of Science for Tomorrow
July 14-25, 2008; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A workshop hosted by The National Resource for Biomedical Supercomputing at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center
This is a two-week program and open only to high school science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) and math teachers. Applications must be approved by the Outreach Education Specialist.
NRBSC's successful MARC Program in Bioinformatics for Minority Colleges has been running for over two decades each summer. We are proud to announce a similar program for non-minority colleges.
In this program, high school teachers will sit on in the first week of the MARC Program. This will allow them to get a good background about the content of Bioinformatics, which is an extension of molecular biology, but moreso in the application area.
During the second week, high school teachers will meet separately to plan a four 9-week terms bioinformatics curriculum. The long-term goal is to introduce an elective in our high schools called "Introduction to Bioinformatics." This is our pilot effort.
Many careers today and in the future require our students to know molecular biology and bioinformatics. Most biology teachers are expected to teach at least a little bit about DNA technology but must stop short of molecular biology. Therefore, we feel there is a strong need to train teachers to take up such a challenge to better prepare our students for a broader range of careers in their futures.
Participants will receive Act 48 hours and receive a stipend for the two-week period. Parking and food are included.
